Medieval conversations · twelfth–thirteenth centuries

Continue beyond our Greek and Roman journey into selected European and North American conversations. “Western” names a connected, contested history—not a sealed civilisation or a story of inevitable progress. The five imagined settings evoke eras, not the actual homes of everyone we meet.

The ancient story did not simply stop and restart in Europe. Medieval thinkers read through networks of Greek, Arabic, Hebrew and Latin learning. Translations and commentaries brought new arguments as well as older texts. Ibn Sīnā, Ibn Rushd and Jewish philosophers were participants in this intellectual world, not merely couriers. A book entering our cloister carries a conversation already in progress.
