Jōmon communities lived across the islands from roughly 14,000 to 300 BCE, with dates varying by region. Pottery, baskets and tools reveal lives sustained by gathering, fishing and hunting. We begin with these objects, not an invented ancient saying. The village around us evokes late Yayoi life around 100 CE; its rice fields belong to a later chapter of this long opening era.
