Before the famous teachers, there were communities holding relationships with the past through ritual. In Shang and Zhou elite life, carefully cast bronze vessels served offerings to ancestors. Their shapes and decoration reveal extraordinary craft. Our opening courtyard is inspired by the early Zhou world: a place to notice how remembrance, family ties and authority could be carried by an object.
